Full Interview
The 949 What inspired you to create CoCo and Breezy?
CoCo + Breezy As far as designing glasses, we used glasses to cover our eyes from people staring at us for being different and because of our style. So then it just became a hit. We never though that this would become our career.
The 949 What is the story behind the name “CoCo and Breezy?”
CoCo + Breezy They where our nick names that our parents used to call us when we where younger. At first we were embarrassed when they use to call us that. But after a while we began to love them, and it just stuck with us.
The 949 What is it like being a twin?
CoCo + Breezy It is great, we always have each other. We have a great business mind, our minds are like two minds in one body.
The 949 What difficulties did you face as rebellious fashion icons, while growing up in Minneapolis?
CoCo + Breezy It was difficult because people would make fun of us. When you are young people don’t step out of the box, they try to stay the same. We use to sit at the lunch table by ourselves, we had our own pact together. We were called weirdos all the time. We use to go home and cry, that is why we wore sunglasses so that we wouldn’t have to make eye contact with people. Once in a blue moon we may remove them. Our close friends say “wow nice to see you without your glasses for once.”
The 949 What designers inspire you?
CoCo + Breezy We never look at any magazines or any other designers. We are all about being different. We are inspired by art, designers don’t inspire us. We are about creating something new, not remaking something with a twist.
The 949 What was it like presenting CoCo and Breezy during NYFW 2010?
CoCo + Breezy Oh my gosh, it was amazing. It was our first time presenting for fashion week, we have never been on the fashion week scene. We had models from top agencies, who modeled for Versace and Christian Louboutin, wearing our glasses. We got a lot of press, and after seeing the video footage from the show it was unbelievable. It was stressful because we did all the work and made everything by hand, but it came out perfect!
The 949 How would you describe your sense of style?
CoCo + Breezy Rocker Chic; we have tattoos, piercings and wear a lot of black. People often compare us to Rihanna, but we have been like this for years. I feel like we are very open minded with fashion. Every day is like a runway for us.
The 949 Do you encounter any difficulties with two creative minds for designing the line?
CoCo + Breezy Sometimes, we are both very creative. Usually one of us starts off with the piece and the second person finishes it. Sometimes we argue, but once the second persons makes it, we are excited with the finished product. We make every single piece together, two minds create more ideas.
The 949 Do people often compare the line to A-Morir by Kerin Rose?
CoCo + Breezy Yes they have. The funny thing is, people compare us to her and think that her pieces are our pieces. We didn’t know about her line when we started creating our eye wear. We support her, and her art is amazing. We just like the creation of art.
The 949 What is it like being so young in the industry?
CoCo + Breezy We don’t tell people how old we are, they can never believe that we are so young. People don’t really look down on us. Being so young in the industry is gun, we haven’t experienced anything negative.
The 949 Is the instant success overwhelming?
CoCo + Breezy The instant success is overwhelming. Everything happened so fast for us, but we have the mindset of being successful. We don’t want to get to comfortable with what is going on now, we want to be successful for the rest of our lives.
The 949 What celebrities are currently supporting the line?
CoCo + Breezy Celebrities such as Kelly Rowland, Serena Williams, Michelle Williams and Ashanti wear our eye wear. Nicki Minaj is featured in the Feb/March issue of Faded, wearing Gemela Amor glasses.
The 949 What future endeavors are in store for the CoCo and Breezy Gemela Amor line?
CoCo + Breezy We plan to have more store placement, we plan on also having our own store. We wan to expand our collection to clothing, shoes and to become a household name. We also have a reality TV show coming up soon.
